I have an early '99 (build date 9/98) F-250 w/156K miles. Someone locally is selling a 2000 E450 van engine w/217K miles on it ($800). It is a complete engine already removed from the van and is suppose to be in "good" running condition. I would be considering buying it mostly to rebuild or for core parts (injectors, turbo, HPOP) for the future. My truck already has a fresh T-500 HPOP and 120 volt IDM. Everything else is stock except for exhaust, intake filter, and DP Tuner. Would the turbo fit my truck considering all the parts are there (up-pipes, pedestal)? I would consider the injectors to be cores only. I know they are AD code and I have AB in my truck. I plan on owning my truck a long time so I thought these parts might eventually get a bit rare or pricey. Does it sound like a good spare engine to have sitting around for this price?
I bought an 03' E450 for a spare. I would offer $500 and try and get it for $600-650 for a motor that you can't witness running. The Turbo is worth a couple bills and is a good upgrade for towing. Do a search for Van Turbo and you will find tons of info.
Take off the intake and look at the Turbo compressor wheel. Look for excessive dirt and grime. If the fins are badly worn it could be an indicator the motor has not had very good maintenance.
I would also bring some tools and make sure you can turn the motor over.
