Alrighty guys I wanna build the original 302 that came in my 72 explorer. Can anyone help give me advice on how to build it or a low budget build? I already have an entire engine along with new 10.5:1 forged Pistons and a lunati cam. I wanna see about a different set of heads maybe gt40s or gt40p. Any advise appreciated

Well after reading it looks like I can achieve a good amount of power with my current Pistons and cam good heads probably gt40s a edelbrock performer 289 and 650cfm carb I can do the valve job myself. Here's my question. I couldn't find anything on it so ill ask. How many hp and tq can a stock 72' 302 handle before splitting?

Thanks for reading the articles. We appreciate it.. it beats us blubbering from our fingers.
A rule of them for "old technology" is one HP per cubic inch of displacement. Of course these days electronicially controlled, electronically monitored, and software-based engines can make 1.5 HP per cube rather easy.
But instead of concerning yourself about HP, torque is what you need to move these rigs off the line. A broad torque curve should be your goal with these heavy trucks.

If it was Clay, he could get an easy 450 HP for $2,000. Remember that knucklehead?
