Well I thought I had this problem fixed, but nope! Anyone have a solution to keeping dead leaves from getting into the evaporator box? I believe Ford fixed the problem in later years by changing the cowl from long-slots to holes. I tried searching the forum for info, but I could not figure the correct search terminology. I have two huge trees that aim their leaves at my truck and car!
Help will be appreciated, thanks
Put the later cowl on your truck. Or the screen would work too. I would use hot melt glue and glue it in from underneath.
Thanks for the reply. Using the term 'cowl' (duh, never thought of it), I found some useful threads.
For now I'll just clean out the areas and deal with the cowl when the weather gets better and the trees are bare of leaves. I've got some solar screen cloth left over from a screen project. I can prolly epoxy it underneath the cowl slots and solve the problem. My '87 car has very fine mesh hardware cloth built into the plastic assembly covers protecting cowl vents from the debris problem. Hardware cloth might be my better option. Hoped LMC had replacement pinhole cowls but nope. Will follow Grubbworms plan to deal with the cowl metal surface rust over the 33 yrs of my truck living outside.
I appreicate the help, thanks
The '87 and later trucks used the pin-hole cowl as Dave said, and they will interchange. But I don't like the looks of them. So my body man is going to glue a black plastic screen on the bottom of the cowl that he's used on many older vehicles.
One thing to consider with the screen or mesh on the bottom is snow and ice accumulation; I have the slots (and will someday change to the pinholes) and sometimes have to beat the snow & ice with a brush to remove it/push it through.
Just something to think about if you live where there are 4 seasons per year.
I bought an 86 cab in NC that caught the dash on fire due to pine needles in the heater box.
Have a 79 that when you turn the blower on pine needles blow out the defroster vents. PO put duct tape over the cowl vent .
How does the fan get air if you plug the vents with duct tape? I guess you could permanently open the "Max" door on the pass side and draw inside air if you rigged it up and had A/C.

I think the PO put the duct tape on the cowl because he parked under a pine tree. When I bought the truck , I took off the tape. Then tried the blower to find pine needles coming out the defroster vents. Also the inside air vents. Drastic cleaning when I get ambitious...
