91 Ranger Tranny
So I started to have some problems with my tranny at around the beginning of October. When I had it in 4th gear and I was coasting down the road at about 35-45 mph it would pop out of gear. This problem began to occur more and more. The problem has gotten worse. Now I can't get it into 4th gear. I have to pull with all my might and hope that it will stay in when I take the clutch out..
All of the other gears (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and R) are having no problems what so ever. After doing some research online I saw ALOT of people complaining about this tranny and swapping it out with a different one. I was hopping that someone could explain to me what exactly is wrong with it.
I did take it into the shop and the mechanic said there was something wrong with the bearings? Just wondering if someone was having the same problems and was able to fix it in a reasonable amount of money.
Or if there is someone who has torn it apart I need them to help me put it back together.
There are a number of possible causes like sloppy shifter, bent shift forks, worn bearings, worn dogs, worn synchros and probably more. Some of these may or may not apply depending on the design. Google "manual transmission [fill in the blank] symptoms" or "manual transmission pops out of gear". You'll find lots of information out there.
Here's a link to a book that discusses various problems: How To Rebuild and Modify Your Manual Transmission - Robert Bowen - Google Books
From what I've read, the FM146 has a plastic ball on the end of the shift lever inside the tranny. It doesn't last forever and will lead to a sloppy shifter. I don't know of a source for the ball only. It seems like the solution has been to replace the entire shift lever/ball assembly.
I don't think the cause can be definitively determined without some amount of disassembly. You might be able to take a peek from the top by removing the top cover, but I'm not sure if that can be done with the tranny in place.
I have googled it but I can't find anyone actually working on my transmission.
Here's something else to consider: Transmission Swap (FM146 to M5OD) and Complete Clutch Upgrade
