Hey Guys - I just got done reading pages of info on this but can't find my answer. Has anyone simply changed out the factory 8" Subwoofer speaker? I don't want to wire anything or change the box, just simply want to know if someone has tried this and the results.
Subwoofers are designed for peak performance within a given enclosure (air volume). Just changing to a different speaker (even though high quality) might not increase the bass in the factory enclosure. It might even get worse or sound the same as what you have. I would guess a short throw voice coil would be one attribute to consider in a different speaker. Good luck.
Yes I have tried in my 2012 F250. Run into a few problems. First could not find a good quality speaker (in my opinion) that had a shallow mount to fit into the factory box. Second problem trying to wire up speaker to the factory sub amp. So in the long run I replaced the entire subwoofer system in my trucks. In my 2012 I put one 10" sub with amp. Sounded pretty good, but I wanted more.( In my previous truck 2011 Megacab I had a MOJO 10" WOW). So I had a box built for to 10" subs. Sounded worse. So went back with the single 10' sub. In my 2013 F350 I installed two 8" subs and amp. Sounded great. I also have the same setup in my 2015 F250
Better and more bass without wiring a new amp, if I can get the bass up a bit I'll upgrade the rest of the door speakers if not I won't.
My thinking is I've had 150w sealed subs that sounded 10 times better than this stocker that were not high quality. So if I can fill the factory box with some Polyfill and a better sub I should get much better bass.
Well that's the thought anyway, may just need to buy one and see.
In my opinion you will also need more power to get 'better bass' (aka louder). The system is less efficient because the sub is behind the seat. I run 500W and it's 1/4 the output of the exact same equipment when installed in a center console location.
The subwoofer output from the factory amp has a huge peak in it's response at 40hz. This was done to get best performance out of the factory sub/box system. It doesn't work well with aftermarket sub/amp setups. It is very difficult to restore this signal, a custom filter would need to be built. It's on my project list. My band aid for now is a sub level control to prevent the sub from beating itself to death.
