Won't Start

Hello everyone, my first post so please take it easy on me i am a newb. I have researched a little and believe i have a leak in the high pressure oil system. My 2004 Excursion 6.0 will start when it is cold but after warming up will not start it just cranks over. So here is my question; the two wires leading from the Turbo had melted and shorted and in fixing that i loosened what i believe to be an oil line feeding the Turbo. Could this be the problem? Also is there an O-Ring that seats the line into the block that may need replaced? Thanks in advance!

While I see what you're thinking, the high pressure oil system is completely inside the engine, in the valley and under the valve covers. The HPO system leaks you've read about will be internal. The turbo oil line is part of the low pressure system, it does have an o-ring on the bottom end and a gasket where it meets the turbo. If it's leaking it should be repaired of course but it's not the cause of your no-start.

Here's the link to the no-start thread.

Many things can cause a no-start. Check the tech folder in the 6.0 forum, there is a no-start thread with many quick things to check laid out in a logical sequence. See if anything rings a bell for you.

It's very hard to diagnose issues without some type of OBDII monitor or diagnostic device. Click on the link below to go to a thread with some basic info on what's available and general prices.

The turbo oil supply does have an o'ring on the lower end, and just have paper gasket at the top. Could it be the problem? Not likely unless you have been witnessing lots of oil leaking from the area which in turn is causing your oil levels to decrease. Even then you would have issues starting when cold. Sorry to hear of your troubles. Do you have a monitoring device that reads live data? We really need something that can show "real time data" when truck goes down. It does sound typical of HPOP system leak ie: dummy plugs. Is your ICP sensor on the passenger valve cover, or back under your turbo?

That is useually a sign of a high pressure leak. To really test this out you would need a scanner or monitor that can read live data as well as pull codes.
There is a tech folder that has information on the tests and values you need to see.
There is also an air test to help isolate where the leak/s are.
First repair the VGT circuit, this can be part of the problem.
While you have issues with the turbo oil feed that needs repair unless it is a really bad leak it will normally affect the high pressure oil system. Turbo oil is fed by the low pressure system..

You guys ROCK. The Turbo line is not leaking i just thought it may be the problem. I was getting a flutter on deceleration and took it to a mechanic and he replaced the turbo and swapped several other things and could not fix the flutter sound and his final suggestion was a new wiring harness. After an extensive conversation i chased the turbo wires to the main harness by the oil and fuel filters and found the short. Once i repaired that it ran great. However i have found cross threaded bolts, loose bolts and missing bolts so i have lost all faith in this guy. My local Ford dealer will hook it up for like $90 so i can go there for a diagnosis. I will keep you posted and i will look at the links you provided. Thanks again

ICP and IPR reading can confirm or rule out a HPO leak. It's possible to do this at home with a smartphone, laptop, or tablet computer and an inexpensive adapter.

The turbo was replaced due to a flutter sound during deceleration? Do you know what air filter system you have?

Yes. It was the diagnosis the mechanic came up with. he replaced the turbo a year ago due to the same diagnosis and thought the turbo had just gone bad so he replaced it under warranty and still got the flutter sound. Since i chased the wires and repaired them all is well. Now i have a starting issue which appears to be a HPO leak. (I think) I have a stock air cleaner.

As previously mentioned it will be hard to diagnose without the ability to read live data. You really need to invest in some obdII gauges before moving forward (scan gauge II for example). It sounds like an HPOP leak to me. You might try air testing the HPO system to identify the source.

If you you are close to KC, you can take it to Anthony at Super Duty Service.

Thanks, i saw the scanguage on a you tube video with DieselTechRon and so i will get one of those. I replaced the dummy plugs and stand pipes after i took it to a Ford Dealer and that was their recommendation and they wanted a little over $1000 to install just the dummy plugs and if that didn't work they wanted another $3500 to $4000 to repair it some more . Now that i have replaced the plugs and stand pipes it seems to take longer to start even when cold.
