what's the possiblity of finding a overdrive unit for a 49. if so how hard to install.

Do you mean a transmission or an addon after the transmission?

The only stock overdrives was a transmission for these trucks was in the F-7 and F-8. I think there were aftermarket Brownie units but supposidly it's hard to get parts.

You might try Gear Vendors. If they don't have one, they might know someone who does.

The gear vendor stuff is made to fit automatics mainly and is expensive like $2000.

A '49- early '51 Merc OD will bolt on ( works on '48-'52 trucks ). They are made like the stock truck trans with half the bellhousing on the front of the tranny. They require some crossmember mods and of course all the electricals to go with the OD.
