Heavy grinding sound while starting
Drove about 3 miles and filled up the tank then when to start her up again and got a heavy grinding sound for about 1 revolution then ground to a stop, thought my battery was dead so had a Chevy 2500 SuperDuty Deisel jump me and got same thing from both his batteries. When checking he said it was drawing his amps down to 10.
Grinding is NOT the same as starting a running engine, it is much deeper sounding. Deep enough you can almost feel it.
I have pulled the starter and teeth on both starter and flywheel look almost new, thinking they were just replaced that is how good they look. Starter gear moves freely in both directions.
Any tips?
While starter is out, rotate engine by hand via breaker bar on bolt at snout of crankshaft. Inspect all teeth on torque plate/flywheel.
Bench test starter
Install starter, pull coil wire off cap so engine does not start, and bump starter via remote start switch, looking for clue as to what is binding, or is failing.
Just guessing it may be engine, transmission, or electrical trouble.
That said, you've posted in a forum for the series of trucks that begin in 1987, so you want to pursue this in the appropriate forum for your 1985 truck.
