98 Explorer Axle Swap into 93 Lightning
I re-built a 98 Explorer Axle. Torsen differential, 31 spline new axles, all new bearings, new seals, new rotors, calipers, hoses, everything. This was just one year ago with few miles on it.
Now I bought my 93 Lightning.
I would really like to swap the Explorer axle into the Lightning. It would be all new and disk brakes. [Please no discussions about what is better, disk or drum, I prefer disk because the are easer to work on and look better through the wheels].
Here is what I have been able to find out, which may be right or wrong.
The 93 Lightning axle wheel mounting surface [WMS] to WMS is 65 1/8 inches.
The 98 Explorer axle WMS to WMS is 59 1/2 inches.
I understand that the Explorer is 5 x 4.5 lug bolt patter. Good. I have some really nice wheels to fit and could put them also on the front with adapters.
My question is: Will the Explorer axle fit in the Lightning rear?
If it fits I could add spacers on the rear to bring the WMS out to 65 inches.
If this won't work. What would be the easiest disk brake axle to swap into the Lightning?
Thanks in advance.

Forget wheel mounting, what's the measurement on spring mounts?
IMO not a good idea. There is another way, and I did not go through this but if you do, I think you will find it:
