right now i have 94 f-150 2x4 that i like but i want 4x4, there is only so much u can do with a 2wd. im looking for something to restore but not with too much work, im willing to some work but not an engine rebuild or anything like that, panels and such i can work with. so if anybody knows someone selling a four wheel drive near houston for around 500- 1000 tell me
Your best bet is to search for a 4x4 Ranger or BII, 1984-1985. That will be about the only 4x4 in that price range that is not a total project. They are good off-road trucks and they are available in the under $1000 range. Though I would suggest a search outside of TX.
Any full sized 4x4 truck that drives is worth $1000+.

That and look at autotrader.com. They have a truck search. No matter what kind of car it is someone is selling at a price you can afford. Dont forget about that rust.

um i don't think so, i have found many old ford 4x4 trucks for under 1000$ and run better than most newer trucks. i just looked at one for 550$ and it ran great but little rusty, i know of one for 700$ f250 thats runs great and not that much rust at all 12in lift also
You have to remember that Starter is looking in around Houston TX. like me. It is just a little harder finding these here because you technically dont need a 4X4 here so they are more scarce.
How about doing "Starter" a favor and post some URLs for those full sized Ford 4x4 trucks under <$1000, available in the Houston area, "but not with too much work". :-)
Last time I checked the Houston Chronicle there was nothing under $3000 for 4x4s. Even on E-BAY there has not been a cheap Ford, except the guy selling the gray primed Ford on 38s and I think the reserve on that was the price of the tires, $1400.
This is the cheapest Ford I have seen lately, though its close date was before this thread started, in PA, and a wreck. The URL should be good though:
I had a buddy that lived in houston, He told me that a bronco like mine goes for about $3000. You can check in the San Antonio area and find 4x4s alot cheaper. There is a bronco near rigsby Av. for $600. And I pass by alot of 4x4s for sale on a regular basses.
I Live up Near Dallas, I bought my 79 Bronco in perfect shape for $500, Just needed Huds and tires, Then I bought my 78 F150 4x4 for $800 it just Needed u-joints in the front drive shaft repleced. Every thing I look at thru ad's and Settingwith For sale on it ain't cheap, Why I don't shop that way. When your setting around with nothing to do head out into the Country. Look for trucks that seem they've been settin for awhile or near Farm and ranch's. Stop and ask about the trucks if it has for sale or not on it. Find some good cheap scores that way. Right now I've got my eye on a 74 F250 and a 77 F350 with 460's and 4spd Thats been settin if a field for awhile now, Soon as I catch someone there I'll be stoppin aznd hoping for a few cheap scores.
I bought an 86 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4wd for 35 dollars...yes 35 dollars! All it needed was a battery, radiator flush , thermostat, and a water pump. I eventually gave it to my little brother, to teach him how to work on vehicles. Since then we put a fresh motor in it (I blew it up mud running...oopps!) Body work and a paint job, new interior, and a stereo. Coming soon...3 inch suspension lift, brush guard, gear swap with locker in the rear. That is all I can think of at this point, but the boy is hooked on 4 wheelin. Good to know he's on the right track!
Where do you guys find these trucks? I just got my dream truck (and my first truck) but I'm always looking for a nice old one to run around in and get dirty. Besides, my guy friends tell me it's the best way to learn about car mechanics -- get an old one and start tinkering. Any websites or local places?

txhurrican, do like i stated above. drive thr rule and country areas and try to find trucks thats been settin for awhile, you've got one plus up north that wasn't down here in texas. northern trucks see harshas winters with salt so they are usually discarded due to rust. body rust is nothing to worry about in a 4x4 used to get beat up offroad. i've got a 78 with rust holes thru the floor board, i don't see the holes as cancer rusting away my truck, i see it as drain holes when the water offroad gets to deep. you can even find em in the city cheap look for old trucks just settin in back yards of nice homes. lot of the time you'll be doin them a favor by taken a old truck off there hands they been meanin to get rid of forever just never got around to it.
I bought my 84 from the 1st owner. He used it only on occasion for work and then parked it in his barn. I used to work for the man in high school and when time came to sell the ol truck he gave me first dibs on it. Sometimes you just get lucky.
