Hello just wondering if anyone might have a input. I bought a low mileage used 351w to replace the one in my 1987 F-250 4x4. Before I put it in I'm replacing such as oil pump, water pump, gaskets, timing set and normal little parts. My question is should I replace the harmonic balancer and is there anything else you can think of.
Also did the factory use cork gaskets or has this been opened before. It's awful clean inside.
THX David
Yeah check the alignment of the balancer timing marks when #1 piston is TDC on the compression stroke, if they don't line up then the rubber has broken lose and the balancer is junk.
Paul, I feel like I should know the answer to this, but it is completely escaping me. Can you tell the compression stroke on #1 without pulling the valve cover? (I too need to verify balancer, plus realign distributor because I forgot to mark rotor position when I pulled it.)
Pull the spark plug, put a thumb over the hole and have somebody rotate the crank by hand with a breaker bar until you feel air being pushed out. Slowly continue doing this until it's no longer pushing air and then use a piece of stiff wire(coat hanger) in the plug hole to feel the piston reach TDC.
