Have an '05 2wd Excursion with just under 160K and it's burning motor oil! It did it about a month ago and mechanic and I figured it was the turbo because it would only blow blue smoke at low RPM, like when driving through town or letting up after highway speed. So rebuilt the turbo and replaced the cold side housing because of a score mark where the seal goes. Now after about 300 miles it's doing the same thing again! Very frustrated! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

P.S. It's been bullet proofed, deleted and tuned with an SCT tuner and the cat has been gutted. It also runs on vegetable oil with a Vegistoke kit from Biofuels Technologies.
I rebuilt my turbo about a month ago due to the blue smoke issue. It took a few weeks for the smoke to get back to what I would consider "normal". I'm thinking there was some residual oil/residue remaining in the system that needed to burn off. If you haven't already, you should also check your MAP, MAF, IAT2 and EBP sensors.

If that were the case...wouldn't have burned everything off within the 300 miles it was driven? It smoked a bit right after I got everything back together and then nothing right up until about 300 miles.
It's leaking out the hot side seal I guess...there's a bunch of gummy runny looking oil in the down pipe. Quite frustrating! The center housing looked fine to me so I don't think I'm gonna rebuild it again. Time to shop for a new turbo...
I have a 3000 mile trip to take this thing on in a month so I need it to be reliable!
The worst i noticed it was maybe a quart in a week...so maybe 500 miles.
It seems unlikely that "blue" smoke is from burning oil. (if it was a gasoline spark-ignited engine burning oil would cause blue smoke.)
Diesels will "burn" oil but the smoke (if there is any) won't be blue...... And a qt in a week wouldn't probably produce any additional smoke at all...and if it did, it would likely be black.
"letting-up" refers to increased vacuum sucking oil through valve guides (in a spark ignited engine) The increased vacuum is from a closed carb or EFI throttle-plate (which no diesel has)
So there wouldn't be any increased vacuum in the intake to suck the oil through the guides.
If the exhaust side of your turbo (center bearing) was allowing some oil to get through, that would certainly produce some smoke (once everything was warmed up enough to make smoke)
If there was a sufficient leak that it put oil into the exhaust, and all you did was drive around at slow speed locally etc, it would probably take a while to purge all the oil out of the exhaust system if it didn't get hot enough every time you drove it........
You might look to your fuel system. You're burning stuff that was never intended to be burned in a HEUI engine......... I would not hesitate to run it in any earlier rotary/inline pump engine............but I would be somewhat leery of running it in a HEUI or Common Rail engine........(good luck on that though!!)

Thanks for the info Rick! It was leaking out the hot side...the turbine was caked with gummed up, burned oil as well as the down pipe. Did a muffler delete and Upgraded to a B-B Powermax instead of messing with another OEM. There was only about a $250 dollar difference between the two...
