Inlet/Carb Recommendations

Good day everyone! Now I know this has been done to death before but there's almost too much info out there to sift through. Basically, My F-100 currently has a stock 390 with factory inlet manifold, a Motorcraft 2100 and stock single pipe exhaust and I want to boost the performance a little, but nothing crazy....it's a daily driver.

So, I guess I'm looking at new inlet, headers, carb and a 2.5" dual exhaust system. Seems most go for an Edelbrock aluminium intake (Performer or Performer 440 I guess?), but which carb would be simplest to hook up....and I'm thinking throttle/kick-down linkage here. Clearly it's going to be an Edelbrock (1406?) or Holley (I like the Street Avenger series) but what about the availability of adapters to get everything lined up and working properly? Also, are headers necessary or are the stock exhaust manifolds actually okay?

I'm looking to get a shopping list together here, which will include everything I might need first time around, as if I realize there's something else I need afyerwards then it'll cost a bunch of extra time and money to get it as I'm in London, UK.....international shipping rates, customs charges etc...

Thanks in advance for suggestions/parts advice.

For the intake, an Edelbrock Performer 2105 or a Performer RPM 7105.

Carbs... Edelbrock 1406 or a Holley 4160. Also consider Summit Racing's house-branded carb. Regardless, stick with 600 to 650 cfm with vacuum secondaries. Choke style is your call.

Definitely upgrade the exhaust system with headers and dual tubing before working on the intake side of the engine. Stock FE manifolds are horrid. Headers and duals even with a 2v induction will result in a noticeable increase in power....and much more once it's a 4v.

Thank you, exactly the kind of response I was looking for. Any suggestions on headers....something i could buy 'off the shelf' from somewhere like Summit maybe?

You're welcome.

Two lines of thought on this... more like "How much work do you want to do?" It comes down to long tube headers versus shorties.....

Long tubes maximize power and efficiency. However, they are a pain to install, and typically requires unbolting the engine and jacking up the passenger (US perspective) side for installation. Long tubes will usually trap the starter making it necessary to completely unbolt the header just to replace the starter... And long tubes generate heat and some starters don't like that.

Shorties are a compromise.. they are waaay better than stock manifolds but not as efficient as long tubes. This is what I opted for: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-pictures.html

Scroll through to page 2 because pics are provided with the engine installed.
