Fuel filter replacement kit?

I have a buddy with an 05 duramax that did a fuel filter replacement and now uses a $7 cat fuel filter instead of the expensive gm one and I was just wondering if such a product exists for the 6.7 yet, if anyone had done it, any downside and where can I get one! Thanks

The pair of filters from Ford isn't a bad cost. Since there are two and one is a completely sealed unit it is unlikely to attract a lot of aftermarket interest. I personally don't worry about one coming out and I change my filters twice per year.

With the quality of diesel fuel, or, the lack thereof, why would you skimp on a filter?
Diesel is inherently a dirty fuel. It doesn't have to be, just is because of the infra structure.
I'd be happier if the Motorcraft was $20 but it's not, so that's that.
It's probably a government contract somewhere driving that $7 cat filter.

The Cat filter they use is a really good filter and filters down to a lower micron than anything the Big 3 put on a truck from the factory. Not sure on how good it does at separating water.

Exactly. Fuel floats on water, that's how its separated . But I guess I don't know if the old trucks had just one filter or two like these do. I was just curious if there was a solution, $100 for a cheap filter is just highway robbery. I'd change a 7$ one every oil change

Found a solution, however that wix filter is only 10 micron and I think the oem one is 2 micron so I'm still looking for a better filter that would fit. Probably not a good idea to go more than the oem filter micron size.

Question for OP - How many miles per year are you putting on your truck?
I put between 25,000 and 30,000 miles on my truck every year. I change oil by the idiot reminder - every 6,000 to 7,000 miles. I change my fuel filters every 2nd oil change. This works out to two or three times a year at most. $200 to $300 per year in filters is cheap maintenance. I would do it every oil change if there was a need, but I check my filters every time and they are still in good shape when I replace the on every second oil change. I know we have good fuel where I live but when I do 6,000 mile trips away each year with the RV, I'm still not having any issues but I do buy from high volume dealers and I have choice with my 50 gallon Titan tank.

I fully agree with the consensus above. I would NEVER risk a warranty issue due to trying to save a few bucks on a filter. I buy from Dieselfiltersonline and you get both fuel filters for $47. I believe Ford recommends you change them every 36,000km but I'll be doing mine every 2nd oil change (20,000km). I ran the same maintenance schedule on my '08 6.4 and I got 205,000 trouble free KM's out of it before I sold it. Cheap piece of mind in my books.
