have 1994 e250.5.8. just had tranny rebuilt -e40D. had few issues before that with high idle etc that Wildman helped me fix. replaced TPS, IAC, Manifold temp sensor, vac lines. issue now is when tranny shifts seems loud and a bit sluggish. took back to tranny shop and they said tranny good said problem is fan clutch. question: should fan turn free when engine off? I bought a new but would like info on testing old for sure. Tranny guy said clutch always engaged. Someday this van might be all done. just a work truck. but like it. hard to trust some of these guys anymore. they don't like do it yourselfers.
A mechanic checked mine once by holding the fan, and having me start the vehicle when it was at operating temp, it had fluid in it, when it gets warmed up, it causes it to engage, not solid like bolted to the engine, but to turn with the pulley, not something I would do, if you have 100,000 miles, go ahead and replace it. The one from my 99 E350, it was still hot to the touch, and I could spim the shaft without it engaging, there was no resistance in it like the new one that was installed.
I'll agree that the fan clutch should not be "loose" and should has some resistance even when cold.
Generally, when the clutch is shot, you can hear the fan 'free spinning' when you rev the engine up. There is also a heat spring on the front of the clutch, that rust out or brake.
But.........will this effect shifting points on the E4OD??? Which is an "all electronic transmission" The ECM effects the shifting points on the E4OD.
I replace my E4OD back in June with a local tranny shop, re-man'ed, and it would not shift out of 1st, took it back, and they had if for 1-1/2 days, repairing the valve body, that they got the little ***** in the wrong slots.......
Just saying.......
And, your right......."they don't like do it yourselfers"
yes you were a huge help to me. and patience. I now feel comfy testing these sensors, relays etc that some mechanics and shops get big $$ to fix. regards to my ABS light, I found out that is common prob. can u believe 1 shop told me they have to replace all 4 wheel sensors? well I told him. funny cause my van only has one in the rear end! and I did that.I will replace the fan clutch and then I am sure I will bring tanny in for re-check. when floor it from stop, 1st seems to hang up at 45 shift to 2nd. thanks
The action of the fan clutch has nothing whatsoever to do with the transmission. I just hope that pile of cash you gave that transmission pays off. (better start finding a more reputable shop now) There are two types of fan clutches, thermal and low speed. The thermal will not engage fully until the engine reaches a certain temperature. The low speed clutch stays engaged until a certain rpm is reached. You should not hear the fan at all, unless it is engaged. The low speed clutch is preferable to the thermal, especially for the best A/C operation in city driving.
when floor it from stop, 1st seems to hang up at 45 shift to 2nd. thanks
Are you serious???
That was the exact same problem I had with my re-man
The shop I got it from, even thought I did an "over the counter" buy, told me to get it back to them, and a day and a half later, they had it fixed, mounted on the truck, never took it back off.
I thought it might have been something I had done at the install, but they told me that "They" had messed up the valve body, and had to redo it.
I guest I had found a more "honorable" shop
So, when you go back to your shop (with your baseball bat) try not to buy any blinker fluid from them, just have them fix Their mistake.
Also, yes, the yellow ABS light is a major problem, the only thing I've found out about it is finding someone whom has the ABS scanner, and having the unit 'cleared' of any trouble codes, or just replacing the unit with a re-man unit. Me, a piece of black electrical tape, on the dash, covers the yellow light quite nicely.
You may have misunderstood, they didn't mean the fan clutch effected the shifting, they ment the fact it was engaged made is sound like it was shifting wrong.
If the clutch stays engaged it sounds like the engine is over reving.
the fan shouldn't be engaged unless it is hot, if it's cool it should slip and be pretty much silent.
exactly ericj. I will change fan clutch today. I know it has nothing to do with shifting but it does make a lot of noise. this tranny shop is good but that doesn't mean they did not mess up. its a pain in the *** as I have to take off the shroud. thanks for your correct reply. that Wildman is badass. right on the nuts all the time.
ok thanks for info. exactly what suspected, FAN CLUTCH. of course we know it doesn't have anything to do with trans shifting, BUT the motor was so loud, it did seem like it was a shifting (slow( problem. replaced it and everything is great.the ABS light also went off. saved a bunch of $$$ with help from this site.
