weird transmission...half year?
I'm hoping this helps anyone else who encounters this. My dilemma...I have a 1999 super duty 250 standard cab. 5.4L. 2wd. Its an old fleet vehicle...basic mat interior...manual windows... Radio with no cassette/CD.
The vehicle has this weird hesitation and it threw a tranny code...transmission slip. Kinda hesitates in every gear. So I roll under it to take a look...I know all super duty pickups came with the 4r100 for my year, and from what I gather, from the exterior the e40d and the 4r100 is pretty much identical. But I've read in posts that the main exterior difference is the obvious double sensors on the 4r100. Here's my question. My transmission does not have the double sensors. But it does have that front boss for the front sensor present...but its got a type of cover that looks like a sensor without the sensor. Bolts down and everything. There is no boss cutout for the rear sensor.
So I'm confused right...but here's where it really threw me. So I'm thinking someone swapped something out or around. But the tranny works fine minus the weird hesitation...shifts appropriate and all. But the wiring harness only has one plug in it that would attach to one of those supposed sensors. Not two. And that lone sensor is plugged into a dummy plug on the harness. Looks to be a factory setup...not rigged or altered.
So what am I looking at? Is it an early 1999 that hadn't changed over to the 4r? Because its obviously not using those sensors. Is it an early 4r minus sensors running e40 programming? Like a transition tranny or something? Did they make 4r100 transmissions that ran without the additional sensors? Did they make e40d transmissions with cutouts that weren't used?
This one has me stumped. I can usually figure out/fix something pretty quick but this has me scratching. Maybe mark or somebody else can help. The internet searches for hours haven't been helpful.
Thanks ahead of time guys.
