My 88 B2 does not shift into overdrive. I bought the rig a little over a year ago and it has never shifted into overdrive since I've owned it. The transmission is strong and shift goods as is but as you can guess my gas milage is not up to snuff. I get about 17 mpg. I have another problem that may be related to the overdrive. My tach will only read up to 1100 rpm's. I've note researched what exactly affects the A4LD shifting into overdrive so I don't know if their related. Any ideas? It's not a problem as it is I would just like for it to work as designed.
By the way, this is a great site and your folks have been very helpful to me already and I only joined today. Thanks.
I'm reasonably certain that by the '88 model year, the 3-4 shift is electronically controlled by the PCM. I would start checking the wiring connections from the PCM to the transmission and make sure all is good. If you're up to it, backprobing the circuit with a voltmeter will allow you to monitor the circuit in real time and see if the computer is telling the transmission to shift into 4th. It also might help to run the computer diagnostic tests (KOEO and KOER) and see if the computer can direct you to a problem area.
