Ignition

Hi. When I push the lever down on the steering column going into the ignition nothing happens except for the heater working and battery gauge working. I've replaced the switch. It doesn't make a sound to turn over either. Or does it try to. It's on a 1985 ford 4.9

Neutral Safety Switch? Your model is new enough you may need to fully depress the clutch for the starter to operate (auto tranny in Park or Neutral).

Do you have a tilt column? If so, you might have the famous broken piece inside the column. It's number 14 in the picture below.

For now I've just been pushing down on the lever. And it seems good.

Remove the small red/blue-stripe wire from the starter solenoid and connect that wire to a voltmeter (the other voltmeter wire goes to ground). Turn the key to START (or actuate the switch by moving the rod, in your case) and you should see battery voltage at that wire; this is what actuates the starter motor solenoid.

That red/blue wire may be interrupted by a Neutral Safety Switch, which also needs to be closed for power to flow through it.

Is the positive battery cable supposed to be connected to the starter solenoid with everything else?
