So it's my first winter up here in the great state of Eastern Montana (yes I believe Eastern Montana and Western Montana are two different states, much like Southern California, LA, and Northern California are all separate states), and the high today was a balmy 37 degrees... Looking for a remote start, preferably with a turbo timer, or a known combination that works. Running a 2014 F250 XLT. Mu first diesel, not the first remote start I've installed. Thanks in advance..
I heard rumors people didn't like the factory one. Something about the range left something to be desired. I'm never miles away from my truck when trying to start it but I don't want to have to be next to it. And will that work with my fob or will I need new keys?
I had an Autostart after market bi-directional on my 2008 F350 and it worked well. With my 2013 F350 I ordered the Ford Bi-directional remote system. They don’t install them in the factory so it was installed at the Dealership. It came with one of its own FOB that has a larger protruding antenna for distance. It is not working very well and doesn’t do what it says it can do in the manual. It does communicate with the truck through the CAN BUS.
My after market on my 6.4L had a turbo cool down timer. (As posted below, not sure if you need it on the 6.7L). You also could remove the key and leave the engine running when you ran into a corner store.
That said:
I wouldn’t buy another Ford remote system and thinking on buying another system for my truck and installing the one from my truck into my wife’s 2013 Ford Edge that now only works 30 feet away. Either an after market or if I knew about the Ford Cell Phone APP bi-directional remote starting system which could start your truck around the country and beyond (still have to look into this one, there is a annual fee). There are other aftermarket remote systems that you can use a cell phone with (Autostart being one of them for Canada?).

I had the dealer install the remote start in mine, he took my existing keys and "programmed" them to work - I push the lock button three times and the truck goes into the start cycle. It works great and I'm happy with it.

I have the factory remote start on my 2011 f-250 diesel that I had built. I wanted the remote start and the supplemental cab heater so I had to order it and they ford made it. The Ford remote start sometimes doesn't work but I won't know unless I am able to take a lot at it. I have tried to start it while working at the school and thought it was going only to look and it never started.
I had a factory remote on my former chev truck and it worked at much greater distances and when I was downstairs in the school it started. The Ford doesn't do that. Although it does have some distance, just not the distance of the aftermarket. I would have liked the type that confirms the auto start. And I like the idea of only having one FOB to start and drive the truck. ( I have enough junk in my pockets) As for the turbo question I can not help you on that one.
I would HIGHLY recommend an aftermarket two way....
IMHO, a turbo timer is no longer needed and WAY overrated now days with the new oils and turbos that won't give you issues like in the "old days" way back in the 1990's
Spend the money ONE time and have it installed by someone so you don't have to worry about it and it is DONE
Spend your limited time on things you do well, and pay others for things THEY do well!
i use the factory remote start. its okay the range is not great but i only have a 40-50ft range the signal has to travel if I'm at home. the issues come when i try to start it when walking out of a store since i usually park out of flying shopping cart range. as far as a turbo timer i have been using the one BD diesel offers and i like it. I'm a bit of a cautious camper sometimes but for the cost 142$ off eBay its worth it. The guy who does the truck up keep at work always tells us to idle the trucks after driving especially when the ambient temperature is high. Since owning diesel trucks its like nails on a chalk board to me when a guy parks his truck and shuts the engine off immediately
Mine came with the factory and the range is poor but it seems to work fine, at least for what I need it works.
I purchased a Clifford smartstart from car toys for my wifes SUV and it was a major POS. Wouldn't work and I had to bring it back to CT 4 times before it finally fried the ECU & wire harness, be very careful with the 2-ways. Wife got a new car out of it though.
First off I want to say thank you and bravo to this forum. I've been on quite a few motorcycle forums and I tried a couple of Infinit forums and they all seemed the same. A gathering of one uppers and "you're dumb for having an opinion other than mine" types.
So I think I've decided to go for an aftermarket brand, and I can absolutely understand a timer being excessive with todays oils and technology but I'd like one, if not for the practical aspect, I just like the idea of my truck turning herself off. More personality that way haha.
Now, which brand... the crime stopper line looks very appealing. What else is out there?

one point someone mentioned a few months back.. if you have remote start. turn off truck, lock and remote start.. will turn off after the remote start timeout. (which you can configure in the control center)
As I posted, I’m just looking into buying another remote, the 2008 is different then the 2011 to 2014, they use RSR. My 2013 didn’t come with factory remote installed; the dealership had to program my truck to show remote start options on the dash screen.
Autostart is that Canadian version of a brand; I had a few and worked well. The local installer closed up shop and retired or I would know more by now.
The 2013 also can use a Remote Start System compatible (RSR, Data to Data). Which means that it just plugs into the truck's CAN BUS without cutting wires like the older vehicles.
I love the factory auto start. I can't remember the last time I manually turned over a starter with the ignition key. You don't want it idling for too long, I think it does a fine job, and the range is way better than it was on my factory Rubicon auto start. I can't complain about it.

<O</O Good Luck…..Let us know what you find out.<O</O
The crime stopper stuff I've been looking at sounds like it's one of these almost plug and play systems, which is quite appealing. I've worked electrical on helicopters, locomotives, trucks, motorcycles and tractors but the idea of being able to plug in and call it good is very appealing. That little electrician in the back of my head though is screaming there's no such thing as easy when it comes to modern electrical systems. Especially on equipment you yourself have to pay for...
