I had to order my truck to get the 5th prep package. Both local dealers do not stock trucks with it. I even talked with the sales manager of the one dealer and told him they are nuts. They can't spec trucks well to save their lives, EVERY dually they have does not have the 5th prep. Nothing in SRW trucks either. They also have a 4x4 KR dually with no tailgate step---totally clueless.
I love the factory 5th prep. I've got about $1600 in parts between the goose ball and chain hooks, prep package, and 18K fifth wheel. You might be able to do it cheaper aftermarket, but you sure can't do it cleaner.
If you want the clean bed, go factory, if the available 5th wheels meet your needs and price point.
I tow a 5er half the time, and often haul odds and ends, but never coal, sand or gravel. I like the rails for tie downs. You must buy straps with ends that fit, great for a dual kayak in the short bed.
