Cooling system questions

Due to a rusted out freeze plug which has been repaired, I have the opportunity to replace the coolant. Figured now might be a good time to address any easy to fix issues...

First - the cap is old. Not sure if its even the right type for this truck. Can't be certain it holds pressure either although my temp has been pretty stable even after heavy use. I figure now is a good time to replace. Is the Stant 10229 the right choice?

Next question - is an overflow necessary? Presumably yes so whats the best way to hook it up? You can see I had this guy hose clamped on; the clamp got in the way of the cap and actually came apart as I removed this.

Btw... I posted this elsewhere but I learned today why its important to use anti-freeze rather than water... My coolant passages in the block have lots of rust settled towards the bottom. About 40 yrs worth. Don't cheap out when it comes to the cooling system!

A overflow is not necessary but it does keep coolant from spilling on the ground. Many people do neglect the cooling sysytem and one thing you should never do is add tap water to it from a unfiltered source, the contaminates can clog the radiator, I recomend using distilled water with coolant at a 50 50 mix, also I hope you changed out all of your freeze plugs, if one is leaking the others are sure to be bad as well

My understanding is by using the proper coolant and distilled water is that things basically won't be so inclined to corroded as well as clogging things with mineral deposits.

I only changed the one... I saved the rest of the kit in case more go out later. I am sure they need replaced as well but the entire engine is due for an overhaul in the hopefully not to distant future. Just patching it together until then.

That radiator cap should fit, but I'd buy it locally in case it doesn't.

Thats what I ended up doing... Just got done with it. Actually a bit cheaper than online and it fits perfect. The whole system pressure checks good too.
