Weird heater problem

I just noticed when I turn on the heater fan in my '79 F250 the temp gauge goes to hot really quickly and stays there. Turn it off and it comes right back down. It doesn't seem to be overheating, so I'm assuming it's an electrical problem, but how are these two systems connected? Any ideas?
Truck has a 300 six and no A/C. Thanks!

Pull the heater control panel and check for a burnt/bear wire.

Thanks for the replies. No other gauges seem to be affected.

Good idea on the bare wires.....about the only thing it could be it seems. Will check it out.
