Is the tranny filled to the correct level of fluid?
double check those U-joints and re grease the drive shaft yoke where it goes into the tranny
i had a similar problem this fall with my 98. it was parked for some time, and when i started driving it it made a ticking noise under torque only. i took it to a freind, we hooked a scan tool and couldnt find anything. we finally found it when i was slowwwwly climbing a hill. i kept it in gear but the incline was enough to keep the truck in place. the noise was coming from the torque converter. shortly after i found it it went away, but we are pretty sure it was a weight on the outside of the tc that was falling off, or it wasnt on properly and either spun back inline with rotation or fell off. not sure if it it your issue, but id open the rubber cover and see if you see anything in there that looks out of place.
