I had mine Chromed but it's been years ago, 70's I think. Had it done by a local shop in my area and yes , at the time it had to be taken apart. I drilled out the spot welds and separated it ( headlight buckets, two upper spars and the lower ). At the time I think I paid $400 but I'm sure with EPA rules that has changed the industry along with Pricing. Check around your local area for re-chromers , I'm sure they will work with you.
Electroplating won't get into tight places and corners very well, so the headlight ends need to be removed from the center bar to get a quality job and full plating coverage on the pieces. As mentioned, you just drill out the spot welds and put the assembly back together with small bolts when done.
You might want to check on the Cosmichrome process. About a year ago I was looking around for an alternative to chrome plating as companies that do that are getting harder to find and those that are around are a little seedy. The better ones are booked months in advance. I found that Dan Gokey, (715) 587-2038, at Insane Paint uses Cosmichrome. I sent my FORD lettering and later F2 emblems to him and he did a good job. The parts have held up well despite being out in the weather for two winters.
