Changing pittman arm when installing power steering
When swapping a 75 Ford power steering box into a 66, is there a way to insure that the 66 pitman arm is installed in the right orientation on the new box? Does it even need to be replaced?
If I remember correctly, the output shaft on the power steering gearbox is keyed so that the pitman arm can only go on one way.
When I upgraded to power steering, I found it necessary to use the '78 pitman arm from the donor truck, but I do not recall precisely why.
The '78 pitman arm mated fine to the rest of the '66 linkage.
When I upgraded to disc brakes later on, it was necessary to swap out the entire steering linkage between the pitman arm and the steering knuckles, because the '66 drag link and the rest of the steering linkage is longer than the later drag links.
Note that I did the disc brake upgrade using the '78 steering knuckles on the original '66 Twin I-beams instead of swapping out the entire front suspension, as others have done and recommend. It was easier for me to do it this way, though, as I had no trouble removing the original '66 king pins.
