Fuel Strainer replacement?

Fuel Strainer replacement?
I have a 1982 F-150 with the 4.9. I just bought the truck and it has been sitting for about a year, so I pulled the tank and emptied it and noticed heavy rust on the inside with contaminates floating around. So I have decided to buy a new tank. I want to replace the fuel strainer because it's dirty and ripped, however I can't get just strainer. I have to buy the complete fuel sending unit, I hate spending $80.00 for a $2.00 part. Does anyone have any suggestions? Run without a strainer and place another fuel filter between tank and pump? Any thoughts?
