Hey guys recently burnt up an exhaust valve on my 96 f150 5.0. Instead of going with stock heads I picked up a set of gt40p heads and edelbrock intake from my buddy. I purchased ford racing shorty headers to fit the new heads and im gonna run a custom 2.5 in exhaust with high flow cat and muffler. I am still trying to figure out why the valve burnt up I was running advanced timing and free flowng exhaust with lack of back pressure. So I was assuming the combination of those 2 is what did me in. I was towing a trailer up a hill with the pedal matted when it happened and the engine threw a lean fuel code. Is there anything I should go over before I put this motor together to make sure it wont happen again? Also is there any tips or tricks to putting these new heads and intake on or should it slap together like stock? thank you
At WOT the computer is feeding the motor via the open loop fuel table which is normally quite rich so it's unlikely your last pull directly caused the failure... it's more likely it was something that accumulated over time and was gonna happen anyway. To that end it would be a good idea to have the injectors professionally cleaned or replace them, and make sure there are no intake or exhaust leaks when reassembling.
Refurbished injectors that have been cleaned aren't too expensive, there are several suppliers online, or you could check out a local diesel shop to see if they can do gasoline injectors and what it would cost to compare.
You don't need new head bolts to install those heads, just reuse the stock bolts.
I just want to note that if those head bolts are TTY bolts, then just get new ARP head bolts and never have to worry about replacing them again.
Ford started using TTY bolts after the '92, or that I'm aware of. My '90, 302, that was rebuilt by Ford used TTY head bolts and that was in 1998.
Are your head bolts threaded from the bottom all the way to the top, then they are TTY. TTY are only meant to be used once. Reusing TTY bolts for heads can create numerous problems.
If you are looking to get your current injectors refurbished give Mr injector a try. I just had them do a set in my 5.0 and they work great and came back like new. Mr Injector - Home
