You basically smooth out (and open up) the intake and exhaust ports. Getting rid of the casting marks and rough edges will allow the heads to flow better. The last set I did I got rid of that pesky little hump on the exhaust side and made the ports smoother which is a plus for Ford heads. You can go a little farther and do the bowls as well, but it's not neccessary for most street/strip/offroad applications.

porting is simply making what the factory gave you better. first u match the intake to the gasket, then the intake manifold to those. after wards, you clean up the intake, by smoothing the surface and removing any casting marks etc.. then u clean the valve bowls, polish the combustion chamber to prevent carbon build up. then its to the exaust ports. but dont enlarge them to much, especialy if its a truck since you wont be reving super high. for a car that would be more important, u also wanna have the little bit of a step between the headers/manifolds to keep pressure pulses to a minimun, (the step aids in blocking them). normaly u gain 12-15% flow over stock which iv very very cheap considering the gain for the dollar.
