yesterday I tried starting my 88 Bronco and the starter would wind but not start. So I replaced the starter solinoid and now when I start it, the starter just keeps winding while its running and when I try to turn the truck off the engine turns off but the starter is still running until I disconnect the neg on the battery. Im not sure if I put the right wires on the right terminals. I got one wire on the one of the bigger terminals and 4 or 5 wires on the other bigger terminal and the one small push on wire on the small terminal. Can someone help me and tell me if this sounds right or can someone post a pic of their engine so I can see if it is right. Greatly appreciate any help
If you remove the slip on wire from the starter relay does it stop cranking? If it does the ignition switch might be shorted out.
That wire should have 12 volts on it only when the ignition switch is at the start position.
The above diagram show a little bit of what's going on, though I realize the modern relays(solenoids) look a little different.
You should have two large terminals, and a large wire going to each one. One large terminal will hook to the battery +, and the other large terminal will hook to the starter wire.
The smaller wires will hook to the large terminal that goes to the battery +. These are hot wires that run the truck, and don't really have too much to do directly with the starting circuit, they just put them there rather than hook them right at the battery.
The one small wire still hooks to the small terminal on the relay.
