Total cost to "bulletproof" a 6.0?

So I am looking into getting rid of my 6.7 and going to an older 6.0. '05, 06 or 07. If I find a stock one, what is the total cost of bulletproofing it? I have done a little research and it seems once this is done, whatever it includes, the truck should run fine for a while with nothing but normal maintenance.

5k depends on the area too. May I ask why you are getting rid of the 6.7?

Tired of the payment. Rather just pay for the truck and be done but if it is going to be a chunk of change to dump into a 6.0 I may just keep the 6.7. Would like to have a decent truck for 15k. Maybe that isn't possible.

Doing the work yourself or having someone else do it?

Not me. I am mechanically inclined but have never worked on a diesel and want it done right.

6.0s are pretty easy to work on. I have done several with basic tools, I would give it a shot. Biggest thing is to have the heads checked and use oem head gaskets.

plan on $10-$13K to "bulletproof" plus if the truck has anywhere near 100k miles plan on $2000 for a new front end.

i just did exactly what are are talking about.. spent $13k on a nice truck with 90,000 miles and tore it apart. $13k later its pretty solid. Instead of buying the bullet proof oil cooler, buy heads that are fire-ringed and have bronze guides.

bulletproof junk leaks; probably due to everything they sell saying CHINA on it

Uh--you paid too much--unless your engine was junk.

I had a local Ford dealer mechanic (off duty at home) do the head gaskets, studs, oil cooler, EGR delete, and STC fittings on my 04 6.0, charged me something like $1200 in labor.

If you check around there may be a local mechanic willing to do the work from home in his spare time and you can buy the parts saving even more $$. Total with parts for me was around $2700 if I remember correctly.

Before I would say you need to "bullet proof" the truck what is it you intend to do with the truck. Pull all the time, daily driver, do you plan on tuning the truck and beating the crap out of it etc. could make a big difference in what you need to do with the truck. I would delete the trouble some egr but if your not tuning it and running it hard you may not need to head stud it. Saves a huge amount of cash by doing this. Just my thoughts on it. There's a lot of these trucks on the road that have been stock their whole life and people love them. I sen your also considering a 6.4. I have been looking at 6.4s and 6.7s myself, really want a 6.7 but it's a tough price to swallow.

Definitely not going to beat it up. Towing boats to 12000 and a small travel trailer. Other than that just driven 2-3 days a week. Studs, oil cooler, egr,...?

I spent $4K to have my truck done by a lead ford tech. New studs, gaskets, oil cooler, BPD egr. While at it he brought it up to the latest 6.0 setting with the oil line, and other TSB type items. Installed Cat ELC at the same time. If doing it again now I would also include the BPD water pump. but other than that thats it. Pull a TT of about 5000lbs and tow some other smaller stuff. not a DD but it is our travel vehicle of choice. The wifes accord only gets about 10 mpg better and is less comfortable on highway same with the hyundai we tow behind a MH, but its about 13mpg difference. i do run a hypertek economiser tune have 4 inch turbo back exhaust but that about it. So a plan of around $5K would be sound.

Wife and I both wanted the new 2015 Ford F250 Super Duty with the 6.7 diesel engine. Mighty fine looking and running trucks. But, dang the price was out of our range. Especially with us soon to be hitting the road and traveling the USA. Just had our truck gone through. New ARP head studs, gaskets, oil cooler, filter coolant filter, fuel pressure regulator, 4'' exhaust system, Edge CTS scanner to monitor the vitals (very important to keep an eye on the temps) when pulling the travel trailer. SCT X4 tuner with custom tunes (economy, tow and heavy tow). Wicked Wheel 2 for the turbo. Already had the full egr delete done a couple of years ago. I really feel a lot better (in my opinion, every one has there own opinion), when hooking onto the travel trailer and going on the long road trips.
Now if we had the money we would be in the 2015 right now.
If in Texas give search Mad Matt Diesel in Fort Worth. He is well known, very honest and does great work. He is the only one I will and do use. Give him a call and speak with him for pricing.

I forgot to add to my above post, that if doing again I would upgrade the intercooler also. My BIL had one installed over in Lake Havasu and he said it made a great difference. Just dont know if he got a newer style or one that has the new metal side tanks. There is a place I am not sure if its BPD that sells the replacement metal tanks that can be welded on to OEM rad. There have been several discussions on the value of doing this. My BIL tows heavy for work and has blown out the plastic tanks on his 04 a couple of times. He also added some of the archoil and likes the results. He has 130000+ on his engine and said there was no comparison with the new 6.7 he test drove. Said he will keep his old 6.0 seems to run better to him. I just read an article that a new cooler will run around $1000 plus install but if you are having the rest done it wont really add any labor to the tasks being done since most will be involved already. Just a thought. This should still be withing the $5K or close to it.
