Hello, I have a 2003 Ranger and have a problem with the front axle seals. Took it to two different mechanics, had three seals put in and right side still leak. Both mechanics said everything with the axle looks ok, no burrs, bearings ok, etc. Anyone have similar issues, and if so what was the remedy? Thanks for all replies, Jim.
Welcome to FTE.
I'll see if I can get things started. Is this a 4X4, or 4X2 & did the garages repair order show that they used the same brand parts & part# to repair????
It's a 4x4 the first guy used after market seals, the second guy used a ford seal. Took it for a drive and no leak. We went camping and after getting back from a couple hundred miles it was leaking again. Thought maybe the breather was clogged causing pressure that pushed the oil out the seal, but that was clear. I know it's not a big deal, just frustrating that we can't seem to fix the problem.
It's just the passenger side that is leaking, no problem with the driver side. Taking it back to the second guy Tues., he's going to check if something in the axle might be bent. He's also checking with some of his fellow mechanics to check on possible cause's, if they had any similar problems.
OK, more good feedback on it being just the passenger side.
I once had a series of seal problems with my then brand new 78 Merc Zypher tranny front & rear seals. The Dealer kept replacing the front, then the rear would leak, replace the rear, then the front would leak. Upon closer examination at my insistence, they finally found a shaft defect on the torque converter that was nicking the seal when slid into place. The rear seal problem was never run down & the Dealer chalked it up to a production run of defective seals, which he swore they would get into from time to time. Anyway they replaced the torque converter, along with the front & rear seal the last time & finally put an end to the problem. That last round of rework lasted 30 years, when I finally let the ole girl go in 08 & still no leaks!!!! So hang in there & work with the shop as long as they're trying to put things right & they'll likely find the root cause. Let us know how it goes.
Thanks pawpaw, I trust this mechaanic and feel that if anyone can fix it, it's him. Like I said in my last post, he's going to check for something beside the obvious. Will post after I get it back.
Picked my truck up yesterday, after finding nothing obviously wrong and talking with other mechanics, my mechanic replaced the front passenger axle assembly. Getting over the flu, so will be a few days until I can drive it and check for leaks. Keeping my fingers crossed!
Put about 30 miles on since new axle assembly, so far no leaks. Thinking it is good to go because I had noticed leaks after driving similar distance with old axle.
