If your talking about that hose, it's the Vent for the Differential.

Looks like a dirt dobber made a nest in the end of it. Stick something up into it to clean it out but don't blow air into it or you will blow dirt into your rearend. Mine went over the frame and hung down on the other side of the frame.

Axle vent looks plugged?. GM at least put a vented cap so bugs and dirt won't get in.

if this is removed & plugged off where will the hot oil vent to??

So you don't have to guess wrong I'll tell you, if your axles rear seals will start weeping oil every time the gear oil gets hot enough to give off heated vapors.
You'll start noticing your brakes don't work so good at stopping the truck as it use to do....
Yup gear oil will end up on your brake lining by plugging that vent off.

It bolts into the axles housing tube that holds the y block in place
Remove it and clean the crap out of it, it has a smaller hole in the center of it like 1/16" I open mind up about 1/8" an added a vented cap up in the frame

Orich hit the nail on the head. The hose should go up to your frame crossmember and get held in place by a clip. Keeps it high so debris water ect don't get into it. Make sure you don't leave it hanging down since there's no vent cap on it to keep stuff out.

I upgraded my breather vent tubes.
Since my truck is a 4wd, I installed some of those little vw type clear plastic carb gas filters near the end of the extended breather tube on both my axels and the transfer case & one on the my 5spd o/d tranny with a GM vented cap on each hose ends.

My 4x4 will have upgraded vents as well. I want them to vent out but also not allow anything in. I'll be swamping my truck up to the doors or higher in mud/water so extended lines will be a must.

A lot of crap gets in them over the yrs.. Next time your at PnP Look for some of those vented end cap GM had the way before ford started using them like the 80's for ford. I replaced the rubber tubes with some clear plastic. I'll see how long that will last before it gets hard maybe cracks.

Then replace it with what ever last longer as the old rubber was pretty stiff tho! But clean you can see any crap & moisture in the tube as it vents.
