I had the same problem with the HUD (heads-up-display) projector on my supercharged Pontiac GTP... the display projected on the windshield was dim and erratic; and there was a particular solder joint on the board that was known to be poorly soldered. One touch with a hot (mini) soldering iron tip solved it for all the years I owned it.

If you have an overhead console pull it down and you'll see if you have the wire plug that goes into the overhead computer. Bean counters may have had them create a harness without the wires/plug. If it is there then you can pick up the overhead computer and plug it in, otherwise I doubt you'd like tearing the Ex wiring down all the way to the fuse block and sensors to get the right inputs.

I'm not sure if there are aftermarket overhead kits, but it's likely there are some. It depends on what functionality you are looking for. Just an FYI, the MPG feature is not the most accurate, so not a good reason to tear an Ex apart. And there are solutions that can plug into the OBDII port that may allow access to some features.

Where there's a will (or money) there's a way!

I'd say probably not worth the effort. I kind of like having the outside temperature, but otherwise if I hadn't fixed it I wouldn't be missing much.

I don't even know what it all does... but since I got this thing I've been thinking "this is probably the most expensive (original cost) truck I've ever owned and it doesn't have a **** outside thermometer or compass? WTF?

I have a Garmin & a SuperGauge but not always in this vehicle so I thought maybe the factory display would be good to have.

My Ex 03 Limited Eddie Bauer has the big overhead console set that runs from the windshield to just behind the front seats. The whole unit houses not only the overhead computer but controls for rear heat/ac as well as overhead storage(glasses/door remote), and overhead lights.

Does your climate control have an EXT button? If it does that will show external temp.

Mine has the same thing, but there's just a plastic "plug" or "blockout" where the computer would be.
