Cam Position Sensor (CMP) issue

Hello all and thanks in advance for your help.

I'm a long time creeper but first time asking for help.

I'm working on an '04 6.0 PSD with 303k miles. The truck has had EGR deleted, STC fittings, heads studded, and oil cooler in the last 5k miles.

I had intermittent no start issues a few weeks ago, but when it did start the truck ran like a champ, and eventually would not ever start. I read a lot and finally diagnosed the ICP sensor. Replaced it and it started right up, ran like a champ again. Cleared the codes, and all was good. After about 3 weeks of daily driving, exact same issue happens. Went to the store and it wouldn't start up in the lot. I checked ICP, not it. I cycled the KOEO about 15 times and it started. Got it home. Has not started since. Cleared the codes again, monitored all the important vitals while cranking, HPOP looks good, FICM voltage is good, ICP is good. The only code that came up is P2614 Camshaft Position Output Circuit/ Open.

I decided since the CMP sensor is a $40 dollar part, why the hell not try it. Well I am sad to say that my issues is removing the damn connector. I tried for 2 hours today, scoured the interweb, and I cant for the life of me figure out how the f*** it disconnects?? I understand how stupid this sounds but I am stumped. Pulled the wheel off and the air cleaner and battery is out, so I can see it clear as day. Any suggestions?

Check the pigtail harness and connector too it may have a short in it. I had the same symptoms and found the crankshaft sensor pigtail had a short.

Good luck working on these trucks is always fun!

It's easy to reach from the topside of the engine.

When you replace the sensor and reconnect it, the PCM will take a second or two to re sync everything. I.e. It will take longer to crank than usual, but it's normal.

Thanks for the input guys! I was getting frustrated with it, and didn't want to break it. I will give it another try tonight and see if it fixes my no start issue (fingers crossed).

I'm really hoping it is not a wiring harness issue like you suggested firedaniel!

I've been intermittently trying to unplug this sensor for 3 days with no luck. I've tried pliers, hands, pure anger... nothing works. Has anyone ever heard of these things getting frozen on or am I just an unlucky/retarded son of a bitch? I've looked all over the internet and I appear to be the only person who has ever had this problem in the history of this truck.

Packed full of dirt. Spray it out. Then unplug it.

Thanks a lot guys! It was definitely packed full of 300k miles worth of dirt and grime!

I got it off, replaced it, put her back together and she fired after 2 cranks and appears to be running perfect!

Bad news is this.. There appeared to be some kind of magnetized shavings/pieces on the old sensor when I pulled it out. They were oil soaked so Im not 100% sure but they seem to be metal shavings. How bad is this??

Thanks again!
