I have about 155 miles on my new jasper 400 rebuild. I am getting ready to do new exhaust using some sort of flowmaster. Everyone has asked me where I am going to have them exit. I keep saying I want them to exit in front of the rear tires in an angle under the bedside kind of hidden. Everyone keeps acting like it is the dumbest idea ever. Anyone else have their exhaust exit in front of the tire? I know it is my truck and I will do whatever I want but everyone keeps acting like there is something wrong with it.

Pricing. The local shop said if I buy the mufflers they will put it all together for $250. Does this seem fair? The last time I had exhaust work done was about 15 years ago and it wasn't $250!!

 

A lot of guys do it that way it's more what you like for sound.I have had a lot of them that way in the past but not any more, really don't want the sound there , getting old i guess . On my 73 i did it close to the same as FOMOCO and then duplicated it on the other side. They are still loud enough to get the local law attention with the straight though glass packs. About $300.00 me not providing any thing. I was not out after performance , just made it close to legal in my home town. Yeah it's o.k. do it your way.__JIM

 

I've got duals and both tips exit in front of the right rear wheel on the passenger side. It'd be loud as hell in a drive-thru if it exited on the left.

They probably look at you oddly because it's not where "everybody else" is doing it... Don't be a lemming.

 

Who care's what everyone says, its your money and your truck PERIOD. Friendly advice on what works, to get what sound, is different than a one sided opinion.

I'd say do what YOU want and if it pizzs the "everyone's" off, even better, lol

$250 for a complete set up from exhaust manifolds + mufflers including duels that exit behind the tires or straight out the back is fair and actually a good deal, welcome to the new world.

Want high dollar, get stainless....$$

Super 10's!! Nice. That is what I want. So $250 plus $150 mufflers for a total of $400 sounds good???? Wow!!!

What does the x pipe do for ya? How do you like the super 10's?

 

mine has a cherry bomb (quiet one) and dumps down straight underneath where the box starts.

 

Ah....not my truck and I doubt $400 either, but you never know. It is this FTE'ers work of art. The exhaust is his old set up, I do believe, just ask him.

I did my exhaust myself with parts from summit racing. I ordered collectors, mufflers, and pipe from them all for $100. A local shop does welding for $5 a weld so I had them weld on the collectors and used clamps on the mufflers. I am still waiting to have the exhaust bent to dump in front of the tires though. The summit mufflers are great! They are supposedly a copy of the original flowmaster 40's. They have a great tone, but are rather loud at the moment. I am hoping they will calm down with some added pipe. Look into the Summit Racing mufflers if you are on a budget.

 

My 78 has duals with no mufflers, they both come out on the passenger side in front of the rear tire and I can't wait to change it. I don't like the sound of it, or the volume, or the looks. I've had cars swerve when I pass them because it surprised them with how loud it is, you have you shout in the cab to be heard, I just cut the radio out after buying the truck because you couldn't hear anything over the exhaust, I have to shut my truck off at any drive through (even the banks "truck" drive though that's farther away and more open). I'd much rather have duals out the back with magnaflows or maybe glass packs.

 

Can someone explain what the x pipe does? More aggressive sound? Better exhaust flow? Additional 100 hp? If I install an x pipe will I have to chain my motor down? LOL!!!

Seriously though, explain the x pipe please.

It was loud because your cab is not insulated. Those pics from 77&79F250 are my truck. My truck is well insulated and with a hot 460, dual super 10's and windows down I could still easily carry a conversation with my half deaf dad.

 

I know my cab is poorly insulated. The insulation in the doors is half there and there's nothing in the back seat area but it is insanely loud standing outside it too. I still plan on changing it to longer pipes when I get to that point.

 

WARNING: THIS IS GOING TO BE A RANT!!

Last Friday I took my truck up to the local (and only) muffler shop. I gave them the general idea of what I wanted. If I purchase the mufflers they were going to charge $250 on top of that. And, that is basically for the system that was pictured above. So, I print off all these pictures and take them in. First, the guy promptly tells me "It's 4 o'clock" So I guess that is when they close...................all the doors were open and he was sitting in the shop messing on his phone. So I start talking about my truck. He then says "I don't know what 79 ford you are talking about. Do you know how many trucks I see a day dude?" I nicely replied that I just had the truck in there on Friday and that it was the blue 79 F 250 with the new Jasper rebuild all painted up under the hood. So he looks at the pictures and then tells me I will have to talk to his wife. I go in and she is beyond mean. Just down right rude. She asks "Are you going to flip out if I say $325?" I kindly told them I would find another shop as I did not appreciate their customer service. This town is small. They can't tell me they don't remember my truck. The guy was all over it on Friday and asking a million questions about the motor and looking at it. They aren't so busy that they wouldn't remember. I just can't believe the way I was treated. Really? $325? On top of me already buying the mufflers????? So I am now on the look out for a good exhaust place. There just aren't many options around here so maybe that is why they think they can treat people this way...................end rant.

 

Yeah, today "customer service" is an oxymoron, kinda like "honest politician".
