1999 4.0??
I'm hearing things about timing chains and/or timing chain guides on the 4.0 being prone to wear and or breaking.......are there any particular years that are better than another??
What exactly is happening to these? what kind of mileage does this typically happen?
(I'm looking at a '99 now....)

There are two different 4.0 engines: There's the pushrod (OHV) 4.0, and the SOHC 4.0. The SOHC 4.0 had issues with the timing chain tensioners, the OHV 4.0 did not.
The SOHC 4.0 was not offered in Rangers until 2001. 2000 and older Rangers use the OHV 4.0. The SOHC had the timing chain issues worked out by 2004.
