Bronco HP

So i found a 92 Bronco 4x4 with a 5.8 and just on here reading threads and researching some stuff. One thing i found is that the Bronco with this size engine is only putting out around 200HP is that true or am i reading something wronge. If so why and what can we do to beef up this engine for bolt ons. I owned an 87GT Mustang and had great power ups from bolt ons with heads, cams, ect.

The truck and bronco engines were detuned compared to the mustang engines(intakes for better low rpm power, no roller cams in early models, etc), so while a 5.0 mustang from 92 would have 225 hp the 5.0 truck/bronco only had 185 hp. The 5.8 had 210 hp and 315 tq.

Yeah that is right.. truck engines of this vintage were bottle necked pretty bad.

Many of the same parts will work, spend some time reading threads on here and you will find lots of info on upgrades.. it's a well covered topic.

yea i figured they would want more torque for these trucks with the size and need to tow. I pulled the engine out the other day and am dropping it off at the machine shop within the next few weeks. Gunna try and clean up and rebuild the heads as best as possible on my own hopefully i wont have to get the decks done or any other machine work for that matter on them. The heads cost more to get machined than the block. Im doing as much research as i can before i actually get the engine back in and might have to do work with the trans but im pulling that out next week then work on cleaning it up and regular tranny maintenance and few new parts. Idk if im going to go all out and take the cab off to clean the whole chassi yet, we will see.

heres what it looks like so far

I'd suggest you look for a set of refurbished GT40 heads instead of putting any money into the stock heads.

Ever since the 70s oil shortage crisis smog and low compression have been the bane of hi performance. it started with the introduction of the m blocks in the 78-79 second gen broncos but the effects lasted through the demise of broncs in 96. However a decent rebuild will easily take care of many of the power robbing defects of the engines in the broncos. I believe hot rod got around 700 hp out of a naturally aspirating 90 something Windsor 351 in an engine building competition so it can be done.

lol it will be hard to get my hands on some used gt40 heads in kodiak ak but i wouldnt mind finding some, my father has a set in texas but its gunna cost to much to get them shipped so im just gunna do regular maintenance on the ones i have and do some real work on the engine when i get back to tx

another thing is the smog pump or vacum pump, do i really need that thing, i dont really even know for sure what it does. i know what the smog pumps are for but i removed it from my 87GT and had no issues can i do the same with this with all the pumbing that goes with it. i dont really want to put it back in if i dont have to.

I gained nothing removing mine, and lost a few MPG in the process. Keep that system working.

the came and everything is stock, just bored out .030

i just got the engine stabbed this weekend and am working on all the litte things this thursday to hopefully get'er fired up that day. I just need some bolts for the upper intake and am going to find some bolts to get the exhaust manifolds bolted to the down pipe. The passenger side exhaust manifold was easy and both studs came out but the driver side was screwed, did some heating turning more heating and turning and finally got tired of messing with it and drilled out the holes and will use some other bolts and nuts for now.

Other thing is im getting rid of all the egr stuff, did a little bit or research and from what i understand is as long as i leave the vacum lines and electrical plugs plugged in i wont throw a code?

I blocked off the holes to the heads in the rear, the egr tube broke off when installing the engine so that got welded up into the exhaust manifold, and crimped the rest of the egr pipe going up to the egr valve into the intake. Idt there is anything else i need to do for it, later on i will look at getting a smaller belt to bypass the smog pump and possibly the A/C as well, but just got to get it running for now. I will try to get some pics this coming thursday but its nothing special just an engine.

yes it was now im stuck with a timing issue or at least i feel like its a timing issue. After messing with it and getting a new starter iv got it to run but when trying to get it to idle good it will stall out and die. Im trying all this without having to get a timing light right now and after more and more searching in finding its almost impossible to get these set w/out one, especially when I forgot to mark everything where it came out when I pulled the engine.

Any help would be appreicated. I have been messing with this for a few days now and need this thing up and running. Im so close I can feel it and if I could just get it not to die when I put it into gear that would be great. Thanks

I performed an essentially stock rebuild on my '79 Bronco's 400 and I netted 300 hp and 450 ft-lbs of torque with a Cloyes roller timing chain, stock heads, aftermarket intake, and some long tube headers.
