I have a 77 E-350 Custom Camper Special that I'm having an issue with one light socket in the dash, it's the one over the gas gauge so it's kind of a pain when the light goes out. I know I should have probably posted this in the E-Series part of FTE but, I have found much more information about this "truck" in this section that I figured I'd post it here.
The problem is the black socket that holds the push in bulb, it's loose where it twists in to the printed circuit board. I've tried bending up the little brass contacts on the socket itself but it doesn't seem to tighten up the connection. What really bugs me about it is sometime it will make enough contact that it will stay lit and then just when you least expect it, it will go out. errrrrr.
I was hoping someone on here has run across this problem in the past and has found a cure they would share.
If the socket is worn or broken, it can be replaced. Places like LMC carry them. If the housing is worn, that's more work and $$, but it also can be replaced.
I haven't pulled the pod out to see if it is just the socket or the opening for it. I do have a few spare sockets so if I'm lucky maybe just replacing it will work, but the kind of luck I usually have it will be the pod opening and not the socket.
The thing is how would the opening become wore out ??
Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of my self, I'll try another socket and see what happens.

.
It could be that someone tried to force it when things weren't lined up correctly and a corner rounded or broke off.
I guess the other possibility is that it's tight, but the contact on the "circuit" board is worn or corroded. But, I would certainly try a different socket first.
I pulled the questionable socket out this morning and matched it up to one I had that came out of a 88 Ranger, although they were both very similar there was a slight difference in the locking tabs.
The socket that came out of my truck had the Ford oval logo on it where the one out of the Ranger did not. 11 years difference maybe the socket has been modified just enough for the new socket to fit a bit tighter by another vendor other than FoMoCo.
So far the light stays lit, of course I'll need to take a road trip just to make sure it stays that way.
