Hey guys, anybody ever changed a real seal and bushing on a C6 tranny? If so, do you have to remove the rear tailpiece or can you do this without removing this rear housing. All the books I've seen are unclear on this. Thanks
The seal is fairly easy to change with some careful hammer and chisel work. The bushing is pressed into the housing. If you have access to the ford tool for pulling it out it is an easy project too. Without the special tool you will have to remove the extension housing and drive the bushing through before driving the new one in.
THANKS rclarke! does pulling this tailpiece involve much. Are we looking at much fluid loss or just a quart or two. I'll tear into anything, that's why I have a 1982 truck. Most of the "fun" is tinkering. (something my wife is just begining to understand, she thinks I bought it to just drive).
If you raise the vehicle in the rear to work on it you may not lose more than a few drops of oil. Get a new extension housing gasket. The rear trans mount is on the extension housing, you should be able to raise the trans a little and get the rear mount out of the way. Tighten the extension housing bolts evenly.
