My official new_guy thread

Hey ya'll,

Long time listener, first time caller.

Well, not really, I've lurked quite a bit, sampled the free refreshments and answered a few questions.

My name is bd, I'm located near Dallas, TX about 30 miles east actually.

I'm a 3rd generation gear head. My grandfather was a car nut and a heavy equipment operator for the Ma Belle's back in the day, and my dad built old Fords. I used to ride to the junkyard on the weekend in a '27 ford roadster with a 400 Pontiac in it.

They were crazy, and I'm pretty sure I put my first transmission in at around 5 years old. My mom claims I was laying under my pedal car, in the driveway, she thought I had fallen down and when she came out and asked me what happened I said "The g** da*ned Transmission is out"

Anyway, I finished a project last year, a 65 beetle, which I built into a hood ride and sold, and this month I picked up a 64 f100 from a guy who had been working on it for 10 years.

Solid truck, respray job he did himself, just to keep it from rotting in the driveway. 292 has been rebuilt, it has the ECZ-9425 intake on it, with a 650CFM edelbrock. Red's Long tube headers, and the three speed on the tree.

New steel smoothies and RWL tires. And he's replaced the rear end with one more suited to the three speed and cruising.

I've really been helped by all the assistance from Shadow, Bill (numberdummy), and others so thanks very much.

I know the welcome thread is long, but I do have a few questions.

1.) I plan to mothball the 3-speed in it now, and swap it for a floor shift 5-speed like the T-5. I see folks have a lot of luck with the Mustang tranny on the back of the y-block but it looks like the same trans comes in the S-10 as well, with the shifter in a more forward position better suited for a Bench seat. Has anyone seen a build thread where someone used the S10 t5 ? I know it's a weaker unit, but this 292 is probably 200HP at best.

2.) Plenty of folks have swapped out the front end for a CV. It looks a little heavy handed, and I'd hate to butcher such a classic. However, there may be a play for some alternative suspension, maybe custom, that would be more suitable and stock'ish. Thinking Coil-over and sway bars. Has anyone seen this ?

If I was to swap to buckets, does anyone have a good candidate / donor ?

Welcome!

Regarding the T5, the S10 uses a completely different bolt pattern at the bellhousing. What most people do is swap the tailhousing from the S10 T5 to a Ford T5. I'm not well versed on that. From what I remember of what I've read, it's not quite a direct swap. Something about oiling and the speedo cable comes to mind. You'll want to research that. I would see how the Mustang T5 is out-of-the-box, so to speak. On mine, it absolutely would work with the bench seat if you found or made a handle with the right shape.
