I have a 92 f150 with an oil leak, it is dripping oil from the bellhousing front of the transmission and there is a little bit down the pan!
Just wondering how hard it actually is to just change the gaskets, all the stuff i have heard involves lifting the engine slightly to get the pan out, but i was wondering if you could just unbolt it and have enough room to replace the gaskets!

This could be your oil pan gasket but it is most likely your rear main seal. If you'd like to try replacing the pan gasket first, it can be done by only dropping the pan down a couple inches (pan can't come off unless the engine is lifted). Some guys on the site prefer to lift the engine a bit and remove the pan completely, while others have sworn it's much less work to leave the engine in place. I've never had to do it so I can't vouch for either method, but if it were me, I'd leave the engine in place and try it that way
If it's your rear main (which it probably is, these trucks are notorious for leaking rear main seals), then you'll need to either pull the tranny back or pull the engine. The rear main seal is the seal on the back of your crankshaft (between the block and tranny). Good luck brother.

im hoping its just the pan gasket i cant see the oil leaking halfway up the pan and it being the rear main seal! but then again it could be i guess. Not really looking forward to pulling the trans or engine for just that, especially when the motors only got 79 thousand miles on it. If it ends up being the rear main is there a certain type of seal i should get to possibly prevent it from happening again or am i screwed either way?

I'm not sure what you mean about 'halfway up the pan'... The rear main seal is essentially right at the top of the rear lip of the pan, it would be leaking from the same exact place as leaking pan gasket, although it would be a strange coincidence for the pan gasket to leak ONLY at the rear. Again, this COULD be the pan gasket, but is more likely the rear main. The tell-tale sign of a leaking rear main is oil dripping from the dust cover at the front of your transmission bell housing.

Just buy the most expensive rear main seal you can find (the one I bought on Summit, most expensive one was around $30). My truck only had 92k when I bought it and it was already leaking from the rear main then...

Hehe... Haven't changed it yet My friend with the trans jack didn't realize that my e4od wouldn't fit on it. For the time being I'm waiting on enough money to invest in a transmission jack. You didn't mention which engine you have... If it's a 5.0 or 5.8L, then here's instructions:
The job really isn't that hard as long as you have the correct tools. The hardest part is pulling the transmission back. I've also heard that it's a good idea to install a repair sleeve on the crank while you've got the transmission pulled, this will help to prevent it from leaking again in the future. Guy here on the forum replaced his rear main and it still leaked because he didn't install a repair sleeve. Something like this:

Well I was trying to save him a few bucks. But if he really wants to go all out, I can crack the safe open and sell my $2 million rear main seal. That's about the most expensive one you'll find
actually believe it or not it wasnt the rear main seal or the pan gasket!
seems like someone thought it would be funny to loosen some of my pan bolts.
I cant think of any other reason why the back half of them were not at the correct torque and the front half of them were???

Least you figgered it out Chaz....hey Chris, most people jack up the motor and pull the whole pan because they're like me and go ahead and replace the oil pump while they're in there.....Later....welcome Chaz....

I highly doubt that someone went to the trouble of only LOOSENING the bolts, and only the BACK HALF at that... Most likely the vibration of the engine somehow backed these bolts out a bit over time. If you want to make sure it doesn't happen again you could use put some locktite on the threads of those bolts
