I finally got an old 5th wheel! It was a coupla' hundred miles away...gvwr in a little over 10k. My truck pulled it easily and stopped great...the only thing is a coupla times on steepish hills the egt would reach 1200...I'd drop the overdrive and it would quickly drop back to 800, but as it approached 1200, it would sound like an old mechanical speedometer that needed lubricating. Is that normal? Just curious...
That's what I was thinking too. I find it difficult to believe an electronic gauge would make a sound like that
My trucks turbo surge could be mistaken for the sound that you are describing. I've never experienced the sound (or surge) until I pull my 5'r thru some mountain grades.
If my radio was on or a window cracked (wind noise) I would have completely missed the surging sound. It was quite muffled, but noticeable.
Try doing a wide open run windows up, radio off without the trailer and listen for the sound as the truck shifts gear & as you near 1200 on your gauge.
I'm Not trying to second guess you, but I just pulled my camper 3200 miles & when you mentioned the old speedo noise it reminded me of my old '77 Vega when the speedo needle would bounce against the stop.
Maybe y'all are too young or were too affluent to haf'ta buy old cars for a $100-$500 bucks...often they'd make a I don't know how to describe it...?screwing noise? Anyway, lubing the speedo cable would correct it. Now I know that a thermocouple signal probably isn't going to drive any sort of rotating motor, but that's the sound it makes. Maybe it is a warning...I quickly accepted it as that, would start around 1100 and get louder as I approached 1200. Didn't correlate to anything except egt. It's a good brand, but, I just got out of the shower and I'm not gonna' go and remind myself of the brand right now. I was just curious if others had this feature or if I should be looking for a problem.
I have had a few old cars that had cable whine. I was 24 before I paid more than $300 for a car. Before that me buying a car involved pulling it out of the blackberry bushes, throwing a fuel pump and a battery in, wire the choke shut and see if she would start. The last one I bought like that was a 66 sport fury big block in 1993.....think I paid $225.
So, opening my mind a little...would a turbo surge go away when the overdrive was turned off? My egt is a procomp ultra lite autometer...which I think is an OK brand.
Turbo surge will cause stresses on the turbo wheel and bearings over time. I had the problem for a while in my truck, mine sounded like the turbo barking. A WW fixed mine.
Well, yeah, Franko...that kinda' sounds like it. Jeeze, I hate to spend almost $500 to fix it...plus removing that damned turbo again! Thank you very much.
You can fix it just by changeing the compressor wheel, or do what you did and pull it out of overdrive.....which you where close to doing anyways due to EGTs.

I kinda figured it may be surge. each truck will sound a little different depending on your intake, filter, ect...
My truck has the same issue. I just take it out of overdrive when it starts chattering. One day I'll install my wicked Wheel to cure it, but no hurry.
