Oil cooler problem or ?

Hi!

Just purchased an '05 Excursion Saturday. It has had a bunch of work done to the motor. Most recently a new long block, head stud kit, and egr delete. After the purchase I observed that the EOT and ECT were way off. Oil would range from 200-240 and coolant would typically stay around 180-190. I planned to drain, reverse flush the oil cooler and then refill the cooling system with Cat elc this weekend. Well... The truck couldn't wait that long. It started puking the yellow slime tonight. At its peak the engine coolant temp was 225 and oil at 255. I refilled the degas bottle with water and limped back home approx 15 miles.

So my question is:

Could the yellow sludge be left over from previous engine work or do I need to go ahead and plan for an oil cooler remove and replace?

Thanks in advance!
Matt

Can you post a photo of the slime that came from the degas bottle? It sounds like it needs to be flushed with VC-9 and new coolant added. Yellow slime is a new one to me, perhaps someone else will chime in that has seen or heard of that before. Maybe someone added the wrong coolant to the ford gold and that is where the slime came from.

Oddly enough, it doesn't really have a smell. It's kind of sticky. It was oozing out of the lower radiator hose when I pulled it off. Kind of like the consistency of paint.

Howdy,

That came out of the Degas container?

If that was a marine engine, I would call it "water in the oil"..........or In this case, it looks like oil in the water......... if you had a leak in the oil cooler, since the oil pressure is higher than the coolant system pressure, it would dump a fair amount of oil into the coolant. (until shutdown........then it would run the other way)

You might drain some oil and see if you also have coolant in the oil......

Which could point to a failed oil cooler........but I hear that's "rare"

Hmmm.....I don't know the laws in your state but if you just bought it Saturday I'd take it back to the dealer, look like you need a cooler

That's what I'm thinking too. Oil in the coolant. And it prob means the cooler needs to be replaced.

I had it towed to the local diesel shop that specializes in powerstrokes. I'm waiting to hear back...

Yea looks as if the oil cooler blew. Chances are whoever sold it to you knew about it. If you bought it from a dealer I would be contacting them. If private seller, you could try but probably won't get much done unless they are decent which is a slim chance since they are the ones that sold it. That's why it's very important to look at the coolant on new purchases.
