How to get better MPGs with EB 2013 FX4

I bought my 2013 FX4 this past March and since I bought it I have been getting around 13.5 city and 15.5 Interstate(NO Traffic). Is there any thing I can do to increase that by even just a little. I love my FX4 and thought the EB was going to be better than the V8 but from what I am seeing with all the other guys who have the V8 its about the same. Just looking for any way to make this better than it is.

A couple of big factors are often at work when people talk abotu fuel economy.
1) wheel and tire combo. Heavier wheels and larger/heavier tires will hurt fuel economy. I've heard unconfimred reports that an LT tire will eat 1-2 MPG compared to similar size P-metric tire. Larger tire sizes are even worse.

2) the skinny pedal. Use it less. This is the easiest and most cost effective "mod" you can do to improve fuel economy on vitrually any vehicle.

Next time you need an oil change, take it to a dealer you trust and ask them if there are any TSBs that are required. My girlfriend bought a 2014 FX4 a couple months ago and is averaging around 17 MPG. My dad's 2011 RWD Platinum gets around 18 MPG on average, but before getting his TSBs done he was down around 15 MPG. The other thing to improve fuel economy for the Ecoboost that I've heard is to add fuel stabilizer to the tank. Never personally tried it though.

There is a somewhat common misfire condition that can really rob MPG's. Cure can be either new plugs, reflash or both.

Have you checked your plug gap.

It does seem pretty low but it is still within the fine printed MPG estimates on the dealers window sticker or better known as the Monroney sticker.

Is your normal commute flat, hilly, mountainous? How fast do you drive? Do you reset your MPG readout with each fillup?

Are your tires properly inflated? Are they OEM tires for an FX4?

Are you carrying excess weight in the bed? What is your axle ratio?

I had essentially the same truck with the 3.55 rear end and that is right on par with what I got for mileage. Nothing I tried made it any better. I tried different fuels, a couple additives and staying off the throttle and in the end the difference was negligible. I tried driving the speed limit and that didn't help but believe it or not I got the best MPG with mine when I drove it right around 80 MPH. Believe me, I know that sounds backwards but I hand calculate my mileage on EVERY tank and it was consistently better with a little higher speeds. Good Luck

How many miles do you have on it now. My mileage started improving after I put about 18k km on it. Around 3rd oil change. It's probably 20% better than when I bought it.

I can confirm this. I saw about a 2 mpg drop after going to LTs.

Sorry,
but mpg discussions always stun me when we are talking anything more than a prius...
these things have a coefficient of drag just a little above a stone wall and carry much more weight than needed for transportation...
You can't have MPG, performance, and towing power... pick one

What was the reason you bought that particular vehicle ?

you needed / wanted a tool to do a particular job... period...

be it styling, be it towing, be it hauling... whatever it was - does it do that job?
because no one buys a twin turbo truck for mpg ! or at least shouldn't

accelerate and drive/stop slower, lighten the load, air up the tires, all the small things amount to small changes, because it is a 300+ HP heavy vehicle ...

next vehicle can be a bicycle, it uses no fuel

Rep worthy but I'm in jail. Along those same lines, those of us who did do our homework bought a truck with decent pulling power and got highway gears to boot and can enjoy good MPG's and awesome power.

I can't count t he numbers of posts t hat I've read on here over the last few years where guys have stated that they'll never own a truck with 4x4, max tow or what ever just in case they need it and then complain that it drinks fuel.

Here is something that will help. Got to a different exhaust the factory one restricts the flow and you will see instant improvements. Talked to someone that did and they gained 1-2 mpgs right away.

Sorry to be the newb that bumps a thread that's close to 3 weeks old.

I just picked up my EB about a month ago and I work in the aftermarket community and never thought that the suitcase or coffin sized muffler would really be "that" restrictive.

Thanks for the info

Don't be shy about bumping threads that are a few weeks old. FTE works a little slower than some other forums, and for us, anything within a month or two is pretty current.
