So I am prepping my truck for a turbo install and am working on the firewall clearance. I have already completely bent over the seam flap no problem. But I need more clearance still for a 3" custom downpipe on the ATS 093 turbo. My question is this: Do people find that they are able to further bend the firewall area to gain additional clearance after folding over the seam flap? I have read lots of related posts and know that many people use a prybar off the engine or a porta-power ram, but is this just to fold the seam or is this also to further crush in the that general area of the firewall? Thanks for your help.
once the seam is bent, you then use the pry bar to hold the firewall back a bit more while letting the placed in dp wiggle/fall down in.
you can beat on the firewall where needed but you wont be gaining anymore room where you folded the seam over.maybe your cab mounts are shot?
I need about another full inch. I have new poly cab mounts in a box and when compared to my existing stock ones I think i would only gain about 1/4" at most from doing the cab mounts. I might have to though... I am hoping to just smash out enough space. I also need to take a look at sliding the engine forward too. I think it may be very far back based on how the tranny sits on the crossmember.
Ok. My engine is not far back so i didn't bother moving it forward. The reason the tranny sits way back on the crossmemer is that the crossmember is on the forward of two possible frame positions from the C6 i had before swapping in the ZF5.
I did manage to get a lot more space out of the firewall beyond just folding the seam. Here is how. You can't crush the folded seam area farther because the it is too strong. Pushing with a jack just lifts the truck. I cut the folded seam right off which splits the firewall from the cab floor making it much weaker. Then i cut a number of slits around the curve. Then with a jack the area crushes like butter. Bend the cab floor up from below with the jack, and bend the firewall in from above with a prybar off the head. I got the 3" pipe in now but i gotta do some more to make better clearance. I will post pics soon.
I finally got it all worked out. BRUTE FORCE METHOD. I don't really give a crap about my cab so I just hacked it out. Attached are some pics. I have clearance now for a 3" pipe with about 1/2" extra space (1/4" per side).
my tools. mini hack was great!
slotted out
seam bent over.
not enough for 3" pipe.
so i cut the seam right out and crushed the space back more. as per above post.
from above.
now i just gotta get the turbo on a fit up a custom downpipe!
