When was the first year ford came out with the factory turbo was it 94 and up and did they have a navstar engine with a turbo.. also how hard would it be to put a factory turbo on my 92 7.3L IDI
It's not hard to put a turbo on if you get ALL the parts , crossover pipe , up pipe, pedestal, oil line, downpipe, etc.
Make sure your cab mount bushings are in good shape before starting, if not, you may have clearance problems.
Another question is I should have mentioned b4, the truck has curently 340,000kms on it would I be doing harm by putting a turbo on or should I be looking into a rebuild, Then put the turbo on if so can some one give me a rough est on how much a basic rebuild with rings rod bearing and all the other junk would cost. As of the body mounts there in prety good shape
i'm new to the "Diesel engine" but wat does the cab bushing's have to do with the turbo ? do u have to raise body to clear the turbo or wat...
Thanks
Clearance is pretty tight at the firewall , if the cab bushings are shot ( which they are on most older trucks ) you can have some serious clearance issues. I found that out the hard way when installing an ATS turbo on mine and it wouldn't go on, till I replaced the cab bushings. the old ones were squashed down about an inch or two and the turbo wouldn't clear.
You could put a factory turbo on, or you can get an aftermarket kit from ATS ( who made the original factory turbo setup ) or Hypermax. Banks no longer makes a kit for the IDI but they show up on ebay.
I've got an ATS non wastegated setup on mine and it works great, but if I had to do one , I'd lean toward a hypermax. They're easier to install and their customer support is better, the folks at ATS know nothing about the older systems and they don't support them any longer.
If you get a used system, make sure you get all the parts, and if you have an automatic tranny, you probably need the dipstick tube to go with the turbo kit. On some they wont' fit wothj the factory dipstick tube.

If doing it yourself, you can get a rebuild kit for $700-1200 depending on what parts you need, but with that low a mileage, I shouldn't think a rebuild would be needed. If it's not sucking oil or suffering from some other malady, that thing isn't high mileage.
Go ahead and pop a turbo on, just make sure to install a pyrometer and boost gauge so you don't tear the thing up.
