there are absolutely no vin stampings on the cab at all. it is on the plate only. the frame on the other had, has the vin stamped in it in at least 2 places.

If you did that here you'd be driving around in a stolen truck, well one that would be perceived as stolen if ever came into question. When found the tag in the cab had been molseted they'll go to the frame to find the number, when they do not match and no way to prove otherwise it would be impounded for that reason.

Numbers matching because you laid the other tag in place of the original or used rivets from the hardware store to swap it out wouldn't count.

I was forbidden to do anything to the vin tag in the cab for the above reason, I asked about it the first time when I was told it'd be assigned a new vin number.

If willing to take the chance heck go for it, myself tend to have to much time and effort not to mention money into em to loose out for simple lack of proper documentation.

if you buy a cab from just about any salvage company or vehicle recycle facility, you get a stripped cab without a vin plate or title.
i have bought over 50 cabs from Connecticut to North Carolina over the past 30 years running a body shop, and not once did any of them come with a vin plate or title. .

What you want to do is ILLEGAL. But can be done without ANYBODY EVER knowing. Just pull the windshield and swap the vin tag. Also remove the door jam sticker.

Also, like Tom said. in MOST states, the vin # follows the cab. So you could also swap the cab and THAT would be legal

That has to do with vin swapping how? Of course a cab or body from a salvage yard does not come with a vin or title. It's for parts purposes only. Simple fact is that if you remove a vin tag you have committed a crime, in SC I believe it's a misdemeanor. If you attach that vin to another body/cab then it's a felony.

To do it legally you have to document both vehicles involved and have it inspected by your state police. If everything checks out it will be given a state issued vin.

To add to what Diesel_Brad said, and oddly enough we've covered it 3 or 4 times in the past few months in this forum, here's what you should NOT do. You should NOT grind the rivets off from under the dash to keep the top of the tag looking intact. And you certainly should NOT JB weld it in place of the old VIN. This would be illegal as the VIN follows the cab, much like a lower on an AR rifle is classified as the firearm. However, with a little care, nobody would know that it wasn't factory.

Yeah, but if you're like me and ever get pulled over by the cops for something you'd look like the pilot in the scene from Airplane.

Can he tell if I swapped my VIN tag?

Remember there's a 'hidden' vin on the frame…. that has to match the cab.

If there is a Vin on the frame it doesn't matter, the cab is the truck.

I live in British Columbia and when I checked with our government mandated insurance company about a cab swap they told me I needed to have either a bill of sale or transfer papers from the registered owner of the truck. Of course if it's from a JY then whatever paperwork they give you would be fine.
Once the cab swap has been done the truck has to be inspected by a safety inspection facility and, once passed, I have to apply for a new VIN.
They said to keep the original paperwork for as long as I owned the truck. I also presume they meant that the original paperwork would have to follow the truck if it was sold at a later date.
