I have a 05 Expedition with 252000 miles. Thursday I heard a rattle when at a stoplight. My shop was closed on Friday figured I would run it by Monday. Today leaving a stoplight it acted like it shifted into neutral then jumped into gear. I made about 4 miles when I lost the tranny. My brother in law brought his dolly and we pulled it home. He was telling me he has a tranny from a 02 F150 5.4 4x4. I looked it up could be a 4r70 or 4r100.... Will this fit in a 05 5.4 4x4 expedition? Help please.
the trans out of the 2002 is most likely a 4r70w, so it will not work in your expedition.
if you need a replacement, you will need a 4r75e. the 4r70w, while very similar, will work without disassembly and modification.
if the 2002 was the rare bird that got a 4r100, it isn't even close to being a match, so either way you are out of luck there.
with that many miles, i wouldn't be surprised to see a transmission fail, but i'd start with the basics. get it to a trans shop and get it scanned first. from there a systematic analysis might tell you what is wrong.
could be something simple, could be something major.
neither would surprise me.
Thanks.. I am checking on it. The donor vehicle he pulled the tranny from might be a 04 or 05 F-150. It was my misunderstanding, he need the transfer case for his o2 f-150. I am happy 252000 on the original transmission it owes me nothing. Everything else is running good knock on wood. How can you tell on visual inspection if it is a 70 or 75?
