I don't think it looks like this pic of a C4 as the body looks shorter on the one in your pic. But, I don't know and it could be just perspective.

As for strength, I've read that they can be built to handle about anything, but from the factory weren't terribly strong. In fact, this chart says they only put it behind the 300 six or 255 V8 in an F100. IOW, in something that wasn't expected to do much work. But, if you don't do any more work than an F100 could do.......

According to the owner It has this cast on it: DAO7006AB .7 And on the other side it has 7k25.7
ID number prefix is all screwed up. The D is probably correct, but the 2nd digit would be a number, the 3rd a letter. The 4th digit is missing.

7K25 would be October (K) 25, 1977 (7) if the 1st digit of D is correct. Based on the date code, the ID prefix could be D7AE or D7OE

The .7 doesn't belong in either the ID number nor the casting date code.

C4 has 11 trans pan bolt holes, FMX has 14, C6 has 17.

I can vouch that C4's were also installed behind 302's, and I believe big blocks too in some cars. But it doesn't look like a C4 to me either.

I think the tranny is an FMX. pictures of an FMX transmission - Searchya - Search Results Yahoo Search Results

They were cast iron behemoths, but good trannies. Better than a C4.

With a 7K25 casting date code (October 25, 1977), the 2nd digit of the prefix cannot be a 2, because D2 refers to 1972. D = decade 1970's, 2 = 1972.

The 4th digit of the prefix is also wrong, cannot be an O or zero. If an FMX, the 1977 prefix should read D7AP or D7OP

The TRANS ID tag was originally located under a bolt that retains the extension housing to the case, or under one of the bolts that retains the servo cover to the case.

By now, the tag is usually missing.

Yeah I bet the tag is long gone.

The owner said he is going to take pics of the pan. Maybe that'll help ID the tranny

the owner got back with me. The Transmission has 14 bolts in the pan, so I assume that its an FMX?

The block has the following: D2AE6015BA15 also has 351 wcp

I gather that its a 1972 block. What does the WCP mean? Just where it was made?

I do believe the FMX has 14 bolts in the pan. And my understanding is that WCP stands for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windsor_Casting.

Yeah I believe you are right.

So is there anything specific I need to know about a 72 block or the FMX transmission? I am going to go look at this engine soon.

I can't think of anything, but I don't know that much about Windsors or the FMX.

Bummer! That's why I usually strike while the iron is hot. Sometimes I regret it, but usually not.
