Heyo! so heres the case! its an 88 F250 2wd....every once in a while the steering wheel jerks left and right Hard! for about 10- 15 seconds one day..then maybe again 3 days later..its always at slower speeds. I finally got the engine done and now the suspension is next. but I want to fix the problem without going through the whole suspension system at once. I'll get there soon enough but for now I just need to figure this one out
if you have anyone has experienced this sort of thing id much like to hear how you corrected it.
My dad said he had a 79 f100 that did that and he said it was the radius arm bushings?
When I got tires put on it a few months ago they said I needed (a) wheel bearing?
Theres a bunch of stuff online (google) but everyones retarded and they have bent rims and un balanced tires and like common sence stuff. ive had that and know what that's like and its not this.
anyways thank you much and hope to hear what you have to say!!
Sounds like alignment to me. I know you don't want to do the whole suspension system at once but everything works together so if one part is bad it may affect others. Check all your bushings, replace any junk ones, and then take it to a GOOD alignment tech that knows how to set up a twin I-beam front end.
Also if you truly did need a wheel bearing several months ago and didn't do anything about it, it probably IS getting loose by now. Get that taken care of. You really can drive something til the wheels fall off and that usually happens because the wheel bearings are gone.
ok cool so i'll work on the wheel bearings first..when i had it jacked up in the air a few days ago i yanked on the wheels as hard as i could and there wasnt any knock? i talked to another guy yesterday too and he suggested it might be the actual gear box..something wrong with a gear or something broke off..idk but wouldnt either of those (wheel bearing and gear box) do whatever it dooz all the time?
These TTB front ends are pretty technical pieces of equipment to somebody new to them. There are many things that when out of adjustment and wore can cause it to do strange things and ALL of the pieces work together. If you're not used to working with them then I suggest getting it to someone who does. They will be able to tell you what's wrong, then maybe you can fix it and not be throwing parts at it unsure of the outcome. My .02
ok so i was just thinking...the replaceable "front end"
-radius arm bushings $18
-axle pivot bushings $23
-ball joints $100
-shocks $80
-wheel bearings $??
-then an alignment?
i was hoping to get it narrowed down to one or two of those... money is not that big of a deal, its more the time. so i was hoping to narrow it down so i could do it over a saturday...church is sunday.
missing anything?
what order do you suggest i proceed with?
idk im still not convinced its not something to do with the steering system...
i... probably shouldnt tell you this part....its on cut springs...
My guess is ball joints. I also jacked up front and grabed tire and couldn`t get any movement. Took the wheel off and just grabed the hub and got plenty of movement. These tires are so big and heavy your just not able to shake them enough. Try that and see what happens.

Bah. You just didn't drink enough brew first... gotta get your beer muscles going for stuff like that!
